SDCC 2015 Wrap-Up – Day 1

The most wonderful time of year: SAN DIEGO COMIC CON! This is my third year attending, and as always, learning new things about how best to tackle the gigantic event. There’s really no right way and you just gotta do what’s best for you on any given day.

For day one (Thursday), my cousin and I decided to tackle the exhibit hall. I had wanted to check out the Mockingjay panel in Hall H and see Jennifer Lawrence, but honestly, I got deterred by what seemed like a really long line to get into Hall H. Of course, as is the case most Thursdays it seemed (or at least from what I’ve noticed the past three years), that long line wasn’t so long once everyone who camped out or got there early was inside Hall H. So I probably could’ve gone to see the final panel, but alas, I ended up getting most of my shopping and whatnot done on the exhibit floor.

Actually, we had gone to the convention center early (before the hall opened) just to check out the early line-ups and getting into the hall from those lines for future reference. I mean, better to figure it out on a day that we didn’t really have much planned, right? Once we got into the hall, we tried to hit up the main booths we wanted, whether it be to buy stuff or get information about autograph signings. So yeah, it ended up being a day of wandering the exhibit floor, which we all know is HUGE, and just checking out all the exhibitors. I also probably could’ve went to the CBS panel, just to see the Limitless pilot and Q&A, but I didn’t want to sit through those other panels in the line-up. Oh well.

On the bright side, I spotted celebs on the exhibit floor today! I only got a picture with one of them but the point is that I saw them! While waiting around at the Marvel booth, I met and got a picture with Miles Brown who, if you’ve seen the show Black-ish, plays Jack, one of the twins! Too adorable and actually saw him a couple more times during the weekend and it was always at the Marvel booth (that ABC connection guys…) Also passed by Cyrus, who was a finalist on So You Think You Can Dance season 9; saw Nolan Gould aka Luke from Modern Family; and I walked right by actor/comedian Michael Ian Black, though I had so much trouble thinking of his name at the time – in my head I was just like “I know him from somewhere!” I also passed by Bryan Cranston and Seth Green’s signing at BOOM for SuperMansion; at first I wasn’t sure what was going on with all the people surrounding the booth (as you know, happens all the time when there’s a signing) and then all of a sudden I saw Bryan Cranston!

Bryan Cranston (and you can kinda see Seth Green beside him)!

I did do one significant thing today and that was the Dark Matter autograph signing. In the morning, I went over to Dark Horse to ask how their signings work and when to line up, and one of the guys said to come to the booth 15 minutes before the signing. I did know ahead of time that wristbands weren’t required for this particular signing but I was still a little shocked that I didn’t have to wait like an hour in advance. Anyways, Dark Matter is a new show on SyFy that’s based on the comic book of the same name, about a group of people who wake up aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who they are and why they are there. Four of the seven cast members were here for the signing and the panel later: Melissa O’Neil, Anthony Lemke, Jodelle Ferland, and Roger Cross. First of all, they’re all Canadian, which for some reason made it easier for me to interact with them. I mean, I was still my awkward self, but I wasn’t any MORE awkward than I normally am (which is what I was Saturday…more on that later). Got up to Melissa O’Neil and told her that I’ve been a fan of hers for a really long time and she laughs asking “How is that even possible?!” I’m like “Well, Idol!” (Melissa won the third season of Canadian Idol back in 2005. I also just realized that we’re the same age.) We just laughed and she was so sweet and nice. I went over to Anthony Lemke next, and I think he had said something like “Thank you for coming!” which led me to respond by saying “Of course! Fellow Canadians!” That then led to the question of where I was from and finding out that we’re both University of Waterloo alums. The best part was when they asked me if I was coming to the panel later, and I told them I wanted to but I wasn’t sure about dinner plans, to which Melissa goes “Oh, of course, you gotta eat! Don’t worry about us”; then Anthony joked that there was going to be pizza, but he couldn’t promise that that was actually happening. I made a little conversation with both Jodelle and Roger, who of course were just so nice (it’s the Canadian way, don’t ya know?), and made my way. With that, I experienced my first SDCC autograph signing! Yay!

And so concludes, my day one at SDCC!

But wait! There was still one other thing I had to go to: the Geeks Go Glam party, hosted by Megan Gotch (The Nerdy Girlie) and Liz Giorgi (Being Geek Chic)! I was initially on the fence about going in the first place, just because of my introverted ways and not doing well in social situations, especially when I don’t really know anyone. But then I found out the party was literally 2 blocks away from where I was staying, so I didn’t have a good excuse for not going. I figured on the positive side, I’ll get to meet some of my Twitter/Female Geek Blogger friends in real life. I finally met Megan and also Gladys (Usagi in Wonderland), yet somehow still missed a few others. I tell ya, I’m terrible at doing parties, but I still had a good time talking with others!
